KPN Selects Connected and EMC to Offer Automated PC Data Protection Service to Businesses.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- Crucial Business Information Easily Protected Through a New Service from Leading European Telecommunications Company

Connected(R) Corporation, a subsidiary of Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE: IRM), and the leading provider of automated data protection, archiving and recovery solutions for distributed data, today announced that KPN, the largest telecommunications service provider in the Netherlands, has implemented the EMC(R) Proven Solution for PC Backup, a joint EMC-Connected solution for automated PC data protection. Using the EMC Proven Solution allowed KPN to quickly roll out a managed service offering for PC Backup to its DSL subscribers based on the Connected DataProtector/PC(TM) software and EMC's storage platforms.

KPN will offer the new online Backup service to both small and medium size businesses, and large corporations. The service is valuable because even among firms that already have data protection programs in place, serious problems can still arise due to the large amount of data that often remains unprotected. According to industry statistics, more than 60 percent of corporate data is left unprotected at the edge of the network on desktop and mobile PCs.

KPN's new online PC backup solution will enable businesses to ensure computer data protection by doing three things:

--Automatically capture desktop and laptop data - even remotely, over dial-up connections - without the need for user input or intervention,

--Securely and efficiently store data (using 128-bit AES encryption) in a fraction of the space used for the original files,

--Enable user-friendly, on-demand data retrieval, providing protection against data loss from viruses, disk crashes, data corruption, laptop loss and simple user error.

Changing demands in the market are forcing telecom providers to develop rapidly into total providers of advanced and increasingly integrated communication services. In addition to its existing offerings, such as telephony and Internet access, KPN also wants to provide its large number of Internet access customers with value added services such as PC Backup.

Hans Aaldering, Product Market Manager at KPN, said, "Value added services such as Online Remote Backup will be important differentiators for KPN's business. KPN chose the Connected DataProtector/PC software with EMC Symmetrix DMX(R) and EMC Centera(R) networked storage platforms because of the Proven Solution's scalability and value in the marketplace. PC Backup and other data-based services help our business customers satisfy their need for business continuity and greatly contribute to customer satisfaction."

About the EMC Proven Solution for PC Backup

EMC and Connected's joint solution for automated PC data protection provides telecommunications and cable service companies with a differentiated managed service offering that increases average revenue per user (ARPU) and leverages existing connections to Internet subscribers.

The jointly developed solution consists of EMC CLARiiON CX(R), EMC Symmetrix DMX networked storage and EMC Centera content addressed storage (CAS) integrated with the ConnectedDataProtector/PC data capture and restoration software. Backed up files are transported using telecommunications carriers' network services and archived on EMC storage platforms at the carriers' hosting site. In the event of unpredictable events such as hard drive crashes and lost or damaged PCs, subscribers will be able to recover any archived files using the DataProtector/PC Restore and Heal process, which delivers recovered data on-line or via custom CDs. The solution is capable of scaling to serve hundreds of thousands of subscribers and is easily integrated into telecommunications firms' existing billing and provisioning environments.
