Vic: Unionists march in Melbourne to save apprentices jobs

Melbourne's city traffic has been blocked by hundreds of labourers marching to save
jobs for apprentices.

Members of the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union marched on the offices
of the Master Builders Association with a bail-out plan to save 220 jobs.

CFMEU State Secretary MARTIN KINGHAM says two schemes, one run by the union and employers
and another run by the MBA, had placed apprentices in permanent contract work.

But he says the union and employer scheme went into receivership last week and the
MBA scheme was also in financial trouble.

The CFMEU closed the doors on its Building Industry Group Scheme last week placing
it in the hands of administrators LOWE LIPPMANN.

The statewide scheme allegedly suffered from mismanagement and double-dipping which
resulted in fraud charges being laid against a former general manager earlier this year.
