Worth checking out

Chess guru Garry Kasparov has developed a fascinating site with awide range of news items and features designed to popularise thegame worldwide, especially among children. The world champion hashigh aspirations for his venture: "Chess is only second to soccer interms of worldwide popularity. If we can harness the power of theinternet to bring chess players together on a global basis throughKasparovChess.com, we have the ability to turn the chess worldupside down."

Launched earlier this month, the site features a real-time gamingzone that allows visitors to challenge one another or play againstthe KasparovChess computer. There is also audio/video-basedinteractive training from some of the world's leading Masters. Amongthe many other features is a soon-to-be-added children's zone and adatabase with play-by-play details of more than one million games.

A schools contest over the internet is planned, with thetantalising prize for finalists of an exhibition match withKasparov. A lot is crammed into this site which makes for a slightlycluttered presentation, but this does not detract from anadventurous project which should prove a must visit for chessenthusiasts.
